Summer Safety

The summer weather is here in Hampton Roads!  Be sure to keep your cat safe and cool this summer!

  • Cats don’t sweat and can become overheated in the summer.  Use fans or air conditioning to help keep them cool.  Other ideas for keeping your cat cool – placing towels in the freezer to cool them down and then letting your cat lay on them, filling hot water bottles with cool water to let your cat lay on them or freezing bottles of water, then wrapping them with towels and letting your cat lay near them.
  • Heatstroke can be fatal – Watch for signs of heatstroke which may include rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, a dazed look.  If you see any of these, wrap your cat in a towel soaked with cool water and get them to a veterinarian immediately.
  • Never leave your cat in a parked car, not even if you leave the windows cracked or are parked in the shade.  Cars can heat up to extreme temperatures in merely minutes on a hot day and can be extremely dangerous.
  • If you open your windows to allow breezes to come in, be sure you have appropriate screens for the windows that can’t come off so your cat won’t be able to escape.
  • On hot days keep your cat indoors.
  • Always provide plenty of fresh water to keep your cat hydrated.  Dehydration can lead to many health problems, including urinary tract infections.
  • If your cat goes outside, watch for hot pavement, which can burn your cat’s sensitive paws.  Provide shade for your cat to lay in while he is outside.
  • Cats can get sunburnt on their noses and ears, especially those with pink skin and white hair.  Limit their exposure to the sun or apply sunscreen to their noses and ears before letting them out.
  • Keep your cat’s vaccines and flea and heartworm preventative up-to-date.  Click here for information about fleas and heartworms in cats.
